It is a technical unit responsible for developing, implementing, evaluating and monitoring mechanisms for monitoring and supervision to verify compliance with policies, laws, regulations, and guidelines on forestry, which allow to propose changes, adjustments and solutions that apply.
Its function are:
Design and implement forest management systems in its various thematic information for decision-making in the different strategic levels (control and protection of forest resources, complaints, industry, PSA, forest fires, etc.)
Design and propose mechanisms for monitoring and evaluating the management of forest resources. This includes the processes of logging, payment for environmental services and industry.
Systems design and implement forest management in its various thematic information for decision-making in the different strategic levels (control and protection of forest resources, complaints, industry, PSA, forest fires, etc.)

Systematization and dissemination of national statistics and information on issues related to forest resources.
Normalize and standardize technical processes for capturing and managing information and evaluation mechanisms.
Design and implement national forest inventories, systematize and disseminate results for decision making. Perform inventory and assessment of the country's forest resources, their exploitation and industrialization.
Develop a strategy for Evaluation and Information System of Forest Resources and Land Use.
Be the focal point of the country and make the reports of the management of national forest resources.
Prepare the Country reports about the status of forest resources (FAO, IITO, CDB, Global Forest Inventory, and Biological Diversity Convention (forest ecosystems) Forest Monitoring (CCAD)).
Keep the geo-spatial information on forest resources of the country (its dynamics, categorizing forests, industries, supply sources).
Encourage and accompany the technical studies required for understanding the status of forest resources for the generation and dissemination of information.
Create and maintain the Costa Rican Information System of Forest Resources (SIREFOR - Sistema de Información de Recursos Forestales de Costa Rica).
Systematize and disseminate information on forest international trade, exports and imports, trade balance forestry and forest sector's contribution to GDP.
