It is located in the northwestern part of the country, like the Guanacaste Conservation Area (ACG) it includes within its limits all the Nicoya peninsula, between Playa Grande to northwest and the mouth of the Tempisque River in the southeast and from the coast of the Nicoya Peninsula in the west to the mountains of Tilarán to northeast; to the north and northeast to the volcanic mountain range of Guanacaste.
It is an area of great topographical diversity ranging from sea level to 1,018 meters (Cerro Azul), with outstanding resources such as dry forests, moist, secondary, secondary forest, pastures; lagoons, mangroves, etc.
This area is in charge for the conservation and protection of the middle and lower basin of the Tempisque river and some hills and mountains of the Nicoya Peninsula; also it protects and preserves the biodiversity of marine resources, wildlife, water regime, the dry tropical forest, water resources and natural springs, waterfowl habitats, wetlands, nesting turtles, the marine -terrestrial zone, etc.
